Adult Health Clinicals

Adult health provides students with training in the general care of adult patients. Instructors will have lecture about primary care, pathophysiology, medication, patient education, and all of the body functions.

During this clinical rotation, you should already be comfortable with communicating with patients. So students can get used to a nurses schedule, usually the clinical rotation days will be 12 hours long from 7am-7pm. The particular school I went to scheduled our clinical days either on the weekend or 1-2 days a week when we did not have lecture.

Hospitals may have you sign a waiver and come to orientation in order to ensure students are aware of the rules and regulations of that particular facility. This orientation includes information on safety, security, HIPPPA regulations, patient privacy, and that particular hospitals charting system. Sometimes students are given hospital badges just like the employees are given.

The day before your clinical day, you are assigned a patient and will have to obtain information before showing up that next day. My particular school had a few different ways for us to get patient information. One semester, we were to get the patient information by driving to the hospital the day before. We were told what floor to go to, then a list would be at the nurse’s station or in the break room telling each student what room numbers they are assigned to and that nurses name. Once we had all the room numbers, we were to find the patients chart and get demographic information, age, race, history, diagnosis, lab values and any other information you think your instructor may quiz you on that next morning. This was very time consuming because the charts are not always available. Some facilities don’t have electronic charting and hunting the chart down can be tasking. Doctors come and take the charts to review and write orders, nurses and nurse assistants have to write in the chart also.

You should only be assigned about 2-3 patients when you first start clinicals. Until you master time management, you won’t be able to handle even one patient. In my case, I had two patients to look information up on. We were only allowed to get the patient information after 6pm. I remind you that this is the day before clinicals and we had to meet our instructor at the hospital at 6:30am the next day. Once you have the patient’s diagnosis, medications and lab values, you will have to do some research.

Do know what the diagnosis means and why the patient is in the hospital because of it. Example: If the patient is admitted for hypertension. Know what hypertension means, why does the patient have it, how is it being treated, what you can teach the patient about how to monitor blood pressure and that a low sodium diet would be best to consume in order to keep blood pressure down. Your instructor may ask you how hypertension affects other body systems.

Try to get as much sleep as you can the day before clinicals. Bring cash for lunch or try not to pack a large meal. Students share the break room with hospital staff and there is not much room in the refrigerator for you lunch bag. Put on your best smile because you will not click with every nurse you instructor puts you with, so try to learn as much as you can, be very helpful and ask questions.

Marketing Your Health Clinic

It seems to be the case that many of the people who are attracted into the healing professions are not necessarily the most business-minded of people. This is a generalization, of course, but after coaching with osteopaths, chiropractors, masseurs, sports therapists, fitness trainers and many others in similar fields it would appear to be the case. The idea of selling yourself and letting the world know who you are and what you do is not appealing to everyone, but it is nonetheless vital in establishing a great, profitable business.

So what makes a successful healthcare practice? I would argue that foremost it is marketing. There, I’ve said it. Marketing. Probably one of the most disliked words I hear from colleagues and coaching clients.

What does marketing mean to you? If you are answering: adverts, yellow pages, expensive, waste of money, then you’re probably just being misled by the media portrayal of the marketing industry.

Because marketing is so much more than that…

Every time you see a patient you are engaged in marketing

Every time you speak to a friend, or an acquaintance you are marketing

Every time you even speak to a stranger about what it is that you do, you are marketing.

Sure there are the established ways of advertising and promotional activities, but there are so many more ways to market yourself and your healthcare practice.

In her book on client attraction “Get Clients Now”, CJ Hayden identifies 6 main ways to market yourself if you are a solo professional. She also lists them in terms of their effectiveness. The list looks like this:

1) direct contact
2) networking/ referral
3) public speaking
4) writing
5) promotional activity (PR)
6) advertising

What this means is that the most effective ways to attract new patients into your practice are direct contact with possible patients and a good networking/ referral scheme for patients to hear about you. In both these cases you establish not just visibility, but also credibility. When it comes to advertising and PR, you have visibility without credibility – you may say you’re the best osteopath in Europe but you would say that wouldn’t you? This isn’t to say that PR and advertising don’t work, but rather that they are perhaps not as effective as the other methods.

What does this mean to us as therapists then? Well first and foremost it means that we could adapt a marketing strategy based entirely around networking with local Doctors (for example), which may be highly cost efficient and also extremely effective. You don’t have to take out high price ads in local papers. Perhaps rather than just advertising in your paper, you could write articles for it, being a health specialist in an area of interest. Or give talks in your area of expertise to groups of people who fall into your “ideal patient” profile. The more you can expose your potential patients to your services the busier your practice will become.

Always remember that there are a variety of ways to market your healthcare business and many of them won’t cost you a single penny.

Andre Duquemin spent hundreds of hours and far too much money building his own health practice. Now he works with other health professionals to help them avoid making the same expensive mistakes he did. Andre believes in building health practices with integrity and is firmly against any hard-sell marketing methods.

Can We Trust Health Information on the Internet?

On a daily basis, I receive plenty of emails that relate to health and wellness topics. Many of them touting the latest and greatest weight-loss supplements, medicinal cures for this or that condition, most current exercise trends; the list is endless.

Do I take this information at face value? No way. I’ve been surfing the Internet for around 14 years, and have learned that not questioning what I read can lead to making foolish mistakes, such as buying a product that touts great health benefits, only to find out it was simply a waste of money.

How do we, as consumers, figure out who the true experts are? What gives them the authority to be a health/wellness expert? How do we plow through the hype and discover which promises are empty ones, and which ones we can actually trust? Additionally, if we’ve been diagnosed with an illness, and have questions we want answered, how do we find current and correct answers, rather than outdated information and even worse, scams that prey on our vulnerability?

These are the keys to becoming a savvy health consumer:

• Consider the source of the health information. My top resources for health and wellness topics are non-commercial websites. They are the sites connected to government agencies, universities, hospitals, public health/advocacy and professional health organizations. The information provided by these types of agencies is gleaned through peer-reviewed research.

• Reliable websites use current information that is current – Trusted sources of health information regularly review and update their articles and they document their facts with citations and sources.

• Untrustworthy sources are ones that rely on testimonials, rather than on medical facts. Sites that are trying to sell something rely on testimonials, hype, and biased opinions. They are trying to make money by convincing consumers to buy what their paid advertisers are selling.

• Read the “About” page, which will tell you if the site has an editorial board that reviews article before being posted. Look for contact information on the website. If you can’t figure out who is running the site, this is a major warning flag for the consumer. You should be able to email them with questions or concerns about the website.

• Read the websites privacy policy. If you are providing a website with personal information, you may want to know exactly how that personal information will be used. For profit sites may be selling your information to databases, which could load your inbox with spam emails.

Skepticism has its place when searching the Internet, especially when it comes to our own health, one of the most important riches of our lives. It’s up to us to take charge of our health and wellness as we age, and taking the time to become a savvy health consumer can help us do just that.

While researching the internet to get some general background on a disease, condition, diet program, and so on, is a good idea, it doesn’t take place of your doctor’s care. You may find that your search leads you to questions or concerns that require a consultation with your doctor.

Mental Health Clinics

Clients to mental health clinics are usually not admitted arbitrarily. The process usually consists of an initial interview with a community worker or a mental health professional. If a client is considered in need of residential or out-patient treatment at a mental health clinic, an extensive history of the mental illness will then be recorded. Such assessments will also include interviews with other doctors and family physicians who have noted the onset and progress of the ailment.

The staff at mental health clinics usually consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, and support personnel who are specially trained. The scope and activities of mental health clinics in America generally falls under the purview of the CMHC (Community Mental Health Centers). This body issues licenses to clinics and centers for the practice of mental health-related treatment.

Considering that mental health crises do not always announce themselves in advance, a mental health clinic or center usually offers twenty-four-hour emergency services. These include inpatient hospital referral, since many cases are diagnosed in hospitals while the client is under treatment for other health problems.

Mental health problems affect people from all age groups, and American mental health clinics also offer services specifically for the aged as well as children and adolescents. The reasons that commonly lead to a referral for elderly persons range from senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease to problems related to chronic alcohol abuse. Mental health problems typical to the aged fall under the category of geropsychiatric medicine.

Teenagers and young adults often find themselves in need of mental health services because of substance abuse, inherited mental problems, and Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD).

The services available at mental health clinics necessarily include group therapy, individual and family counseling, and a social awareness cell. The latter would be staffed by personnel who could explain the various issued surrounding metal health in layman’s terms to clients and their families. They are also an integral part of the evaluation process.

How to Find the Right Health Clinic With a Personal Touch For Yourself

When you’re looking to find the right health clinic, there are several alternatives to bear in mind before you make a decision.

First of all, what is your situation? What are your goals?

You wouldn’t try to find a personal injury rehab health clinic if you’re pregnant, would you? Of course not. So the first thing you’ll need to do is define your problem. You might want to consider the right type of health care.

These days, everyone is turning to the internet to find answers. There’s no doubt that’s how you found this page.

So let’s begin there. Fire up your favorite search engine, like Google, for example. Then begin to enter the right keywords in the search box. If you’re trying to find an assisted living clinic, you might enter something like, “assisted care living facility” and begin to go over the results.

If you’re not able to find something in your immediate area, you might try to enter your city & state in the search box as well. For example, “assisted care living facility in Dallas, Texas”. Chances are, you’ll get several results you can work with.

When it comes to your health – or the health of a loved one, don’t make your final decision based on a web page. Instead, you should use the internet as a great guide to finding a list of possibilities. From there, you can start calling the local facilities to begin narrowing things down. I’d suggest that you have a good list of questions to ask the right person.

Finally, you can go and visit the appropriate clinics that you have on your final list.

How to Choose a Mental Health Clinic

The process of choosing a mental health clinic begins by first identifying which kind of clinic you wish to opt for. There are various options of clinics to choose from such as – a mental health clinic that only caters to outpatients and is run by a privately owned organization or clinics which offer inpatient facility or a day patient facility, most of which are usually run by the government or the clinics run by health services or communities. Depending on what exactly are your needs, you can choose a particular kind of clinic.

The next important factor to be considered before selecting a clinic is whether the clinic accepts insurance or any other form of medical payments. Also, find out about the services being offered at the clinic, in detail. If you are not sure about the insurance coverage, then consult your insurance provider and find out about the mental health clinics covered by them or just go online to your insurance provider’s website and you can get these details. If you can, it is better to get a referral from your family doctor or the health care provider you have been visiting. Otherwise, you can speak to your friends and family members and ask for their inputs too. Since insurance policies on providers of mental health vary widely, always check your coverage details beforehand.

If a patient is quite unstable and requires hospitalization, then it is advisable to opt for a mental health clinic operated by government, as they have direct link ups with government mental hospitals, it is a better choice. However, even private clinics have their own advantages such as they may house a number of psychiatrists and therapists who work together and render their services to the patients, this way, if a patient requires the services of therapist and psychiatrist, then he can get that in a single place. Moreover, few of these clinics may have mental health practitioners who have specialization in certain kinds of clients or therapies, such as a a child psychiatrist or a couples therapist in particular, etc. Payments for services such as therapy for an individual or for groups can be very expensive, hence never forget to contact your insurance provider before you sign up for any of these activities.

Finding the best mental health clinic, requires considerable amount of effort, since not all the clinics cater to all kinds of requirements, you have to do intense research to narrow down onto the clinic that is the best for you. Especially for people who are not residing in urban areas, there might not be much choice, since there may or may not exist a mental health care center in their neighborhood. For most of these people, it is better if they can get a referral and then find out about the clinic before making any efforts of visiting the clinic.

You might not really realize the various kinds of options available in mental health clinics, until the day you start your search. Hence, keep the above mentioned factors in mind, before you begin searching.

Health Information Technology – A Bright Future

The health care industry is getting more technologically advanced every year. And with those advances, comes a need for people who not only understand how to use the technology, but can help make innovations that will continue to advance the system.

One of the degrees that can put you at the heart of all the action is a health information technology degree. This type of degree program will teach you how to use technology to collect, analyze, monitor, maintain and report health data. If you’re interested in the medical field, a health information technology program offers a truly fascinating point from which to explore your passions and start your career.

In the classroom and in the field, when you’re enrolled in a health information technology program, you’ll learn to process requests for the release of personal health information, code clinical information, process and use health data for clinical quality management, bill patients for services (and provide reimbursement) and learn compliance while protecting patient privacy. And frankly, the jobs you’ll receive after you receive your health information technology degree will put you in a position of great responsibility and control.

Post-Health Information Technology Program Jobs

With the degree in hand, some of the positions you can expect to work in include:

o Health Information Technician. Job responsibilities often include reviewing medical charts to check for completion and accuracy, generating reports and assigning diagnosis codes to medical charts for insurance claims and data collection purposes, plus gathering, analyzing and managing information about patients so healthcare providers can properly care for them.

o Medical Coder. With a health information technology degree you can enter the field as a medical coder, which, because of its medical and business nature, is often a springboard for advancement opportunities within the healthcare sector. Some of the responsibilities of a medical coder include reviewing medical documents provided by physicians, then translating the information into numeric codes and sequencing diagnostic and procedural codes by using a standard healthcare coding system. This work is crucial to the financial reimbursement of healthcare professionals by the insurance companies that provide policies for the patients.

o Health Information Administrator. After completing a health information technology program you may work as a healthcare administrator. In this position you will oversee (or as an entry-level job assist the person who oversees) the business of providing services to patients and manage the health information systems that house the medical facility’s patient-related documents, insurance information, and business documentation.

o Medical Secretary. Medical secretaries help maintain order in the office and provide the support necessary for proper patient care. Some of the job responsibilities may include transcribing dictation, generating correspondence, assisting physicians with reports, speeches, articles, and conference proceedings, as well as providing technological support and maintaining medical records.

The Job Outlook

According to a 2006-2007 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report, employment for medical records and health information technicians is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations from now through 2014.

A few highlights of the BLS report include:

o Job prospects should be very good; technicians with a strong background in medical coding will be in particularly high demand.

o Those entering the field will usually have an associate degree; courses include anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, statistics, and computer science.

o Most employers prefer to hire Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT), who must pass a written examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). To take the examination, a person must graduate from a 2-year health information technology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Technicians who receive a Health Information Technology degree from a non-CAHIIM-accredited program or who are trained on the job are not eligible to take the examination.

o Median annual earnings of medical records and health information technicians were $25,590 in 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $20,650 and $32,990. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $17,720, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $41,760.
With a job outlook so bright – and an education that’s both challenging and exciting – choosing a health information technology degree program is an intelligent step to a rewarding career.

Point of Service – POS health insurance plans are one of the indemnity type options in which the primary health care providers usually make referrals to other providers within the plan. In the event the doctors make referrals which are out of the plan, that plan pays all or most of the bill. However, if you refer yourself to an outside provider, the service charges may also be covered by the plan but the individual may be required to pay the coinsurance.

You may speak with your chosen primary doctor for further referrals to a specialist. Generally, you are paying fewer out-of-pocket fees with this type of health insurance plan. However, there are certain instances that you may be often charged of the fees or co-payment for services such as doctor visits or prescriptions.

Government-Sponsored Health Insurance

Indian Health Services – This is part of the Department of Health and Human Services Program offering all American Indians the medical assistance at HIS facilities. Also, HIS helps in paying the cost of the health care services utilized at non-HIS facilities.

Medicaid – This is a federal or s state public assistance program created in the year 1965. These are available for the people who may have insufficient resources to pay for the health care services or for private insurance policies. Medicaid is available in all states. Eligibility levels and coverage benefits may vary though.

Medicare – This is a health care program for people aging 65 and older, with certain disabilities that pays part of the cost associated with hospitalization, surgery, home health care, doctor’s bills, and skilled nursing care.

Military Health Care – This type includes the TRICARE or the CHAMPUS (Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services) and CHAMPVA (Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affair). The Department of Veterans Affair (VA) may also provide this service.

State Children’s Health Insurance Program – This is available to children whose low-income parents were not able to qualify for the Medicaid.
State-Specific Plans – This type of plan is available for low income uninsured individuals.

There are many different types of insurance plans that you may have the prerogative to know about. By learning which health care insurance fits your situation, you can avail of the many options that will likely be of great assistance to you in times when you will need it most. Insurance costs have typically become one of the common draw backs in choosing for an insurance quote. However, weighing the benefits will really matter. Make sure that you always read the benefits, terms and conditions before landing to whichever type of health insurance you choose.
